New Parents Need Self-Care, Be Selfish Sometimes

Self-care for a new parent is usually an afterthought. It doesn't become apparent until you are exhausted, upset, and frustrated. Personal care is essential for everyone, especially with a new baby that requires lots of care and attention.  It is important to remember that before you were a parent, you were an individual.  As a parent, we can't allow ourselves to get so wrapped up in caring for our families we lose ourselves. Self-care doesn't have to be an elaborate process; it can be as simple as 30 minutes of uninterrupted time to take a shower or short walk. Do not ever feel guilty about wanting a moment to yourself.  Everyone needs time to recharge. Parents aren't any different.
Newborns are cute and cuddly, but they are a lot of work. Family and friends can unintentionally make us feel bad for wanting time away from such a lovely little being. But remember you are human and it's ok to be selfish sometimes. Try creating a self-care schedule daily. Communication with your partner or family is vital.  Please don't expect them to read your mind and assume they know what you need. Speak up and tell them. Do not wait until you're stressed that you end up lashing out. Partners are there to help; they may need your direction. Your mental and emotional well-being is essential too. Be kind to yourself. We often want to be everything for our families at the expense of our health. Take care of yourself first always.

Self Care Affirmations are a great way to start your day. You can post them around the house to make them visible throughout your day. Encourage positive energy to fill you each day.
