POSTPARTUM DOULA

The postpartum period is defined as the 6-8 week period following the birth of a baby when the physiologic effects of pregnancy are returning to the non-pregnant state. Sounds simple, right? Sure, if you’re not trying to navigate caring for, and feeding a newborn while absolutely exhausted from lack of sleep…

This time period is a unique experience that comes with varying physical and emotional needs. What we know for sure is that it is a period of time filled with emotionality, love, concern, joy, frustration, and an overall need to be understood without having to give a lengthy explanation that wouldn’t make sense in any language under the sun. It is a confusing and explorative time; you are literally finding yourself as a parent and learning the needs of your baby at the same time…

At Doulas for Life, our postpartum doulas, zero in on the three things that matter most when it comes to supporting you.

  1. Your physical, mental and emotional recovery from giving birth. This includes recognizing what is “normal”, and what may be beyond the scope of normal. We focus on all things relating to your healthful adjustment to life as a parent.

  2. Your baby’s adjustment to life outside of the womb. This includes feeding support, proper latch and positions, paced-feeding, bottle prep, breast milk storage, bathing, cord care, safe sleep, gentle soothing techniques, and so much more.

  3. Anything that might get in the way of numbers 1 and 2. This includes meal and snack preparation, light housekeeping, laundry, newborn product and safety information, scheduling appointments, assistance with errands, and so much more.

Each family’s needs vary in terms of care. Some families prefer daytime support and some prefer overnight care.

Daytime Support (Minimum 5 Hour Shifts) – During the day, your doula will be your extra set of eyes, ears and hands. While noticing every nuance and need as it arises, they will help strategize routines that align with your unique parenting philosophies. The informational support available to you during each shift is limitless as our team has made it their life’s work to stay current on all things relating to babies and their parents. This includes the safety recommendations set forth by the American Academy of Pediatrics

Overnight Newborn care Specialist (Minimum 8 Hour Shifts) – Our overnight support assists you in healthfully transitioning into life with a newborn. Your doula will enable you to get the much needed rest you desire as they care for your baby through the night. If you will be breastfeeding, your doula will bring your baby to you for feedings. Once feeding is complete, you can head back to sleep knowing that diapering, swaddling, and helping your little one settle back in is all happening in the competent hands of your expertly trained doula.

Whether you are looking for a handful of short daytime shifts to better acclimate to life with a newborn, or you are in need of overnight care for a period of time, Doulas For Life is awaiting your call.

We don’t anticipate you knowing exactly what you’ll need. You’ve likely not have done this before. Contact us today and let us help you develop a plan that is absolutely perfect for your family!
